ASUS VG279Q is a good 27-inch and 144Hz monitor with an IPS panel. It has a simple design with exceptional ergonomics. It offers good image quality, with extremely precise colors and high maximum brightness, but is limited a bit by its 1080p resolution. The movement looks great thanks to the extremely fast response time, and has a black frame insertion function to help reduce any motion blur. It also supports FreeSync variable update frequency technology to reduce tearing in games. Unfortunately, as is the case with most IPS monitors, it doesn’t look good in a dark room due to its low contrast ratio, but it has wide viewing angles.
The design of the Asus VG279Q gaming monitor maintains the distinctive aesthetic of the brand’s renowned gaming line, presenting a simplicity that appeals to modern gamers. Its matte black chassis possesses an exceptional texture that is both easy to maintain and resistant to stains and smudges. While the monitor does feature thin bezels, it incorporates a dual stage design that results in 10mm borders on three sides.
In terms of build quality and craftsmanship, the Asus VG279Q surpasses expectations despite being positioned in a lower tier than the ROG Swift displays. The edges of the chassis are precisely cut and exhibit consistent smoothness, a testament to the brand’s meticulous quality control and assurance processes. Adjusting the display does not cause any warping or creaking, indicating its ability to withstand the demands of daily usage with ease.
Asus gaming monitors are known for their user-friendly control layouts, and the Asus VG279Q follows suit with a modernized interface that simplifies access to the on-screen display (OSD). While it lacks a remote, it incorporates a multi-directional joystick accompanied by hotkeys, enhancing convenience. Navigating through the monitor’s built-in features, such as GamePlus, is a breeze and less perplexing compared to most competitors.
The Asus VG279Q boasts a powerful backlight with a maximum brightness of 460cd/m2. However, this feature fails to enhance the display’s contrast, which reaches a maximum of 850:1. While this score is respectable, there are newer models available that can achieve a higher contrast ratio of up to 1200:1, providing a better range.
The gamma performance is also affected, measuring at 2.08, resulting in a lighter screen than desired. Consequently, blacks appear somewhat grayish, and dark colors may appear washed out, particularly in darker titles like The Division 2. Games with brighter environments, such as Apex Legends, are less impacted, but there are instances where these flaws can become noticeable and bothersome.
Regarding panel uniformity, the Asus VG279Q’s test unit falls slightly short of expectations, which is typical for an IPS panel. There are minor leaks in the corners of the screen, affecting black uniformity. However, these imperfections are not noticeable during in-game sequences. It’s important to note that panel uniformity can vary between units, as each module is unique.
The Asus VG279Q handles motion exceptionally well, making it unlikely that most users will need to utilize its overdrive features. Blurring and image retention are not significant issues in the display’s performance, which is impressive considering it is an IPS variant. Even for users with particularly sensitive eyes who may notice these flaws in games like CSGO, the monitor offers the 1ms MPRT feature to further enhance image clarity.
Furthermore, the Asus VG279Q is equipped with a fully-flexible stand that offers height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustments, providing users with optimal ergonomic positioning. The stand mechanism shares similarities with variants like the PG278QR, ensuring reliability and eliminating the need for replacements. Alternatively, users can opt for a VESA monitor arm, as the chassis conveniently conceals a 100 x 100 pattern for this purpose.
ASUS VG279Q is good for multimedia. It has an excellent response time, so fast-moving objects have a very short blur trail behind them. The image also stays accurate when it appears in a corner, which is great for seeing with some other people. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look so good in a dark room, but it has exceptional color accuracy, so you don’t need to calibrate it if you don’t want to.
ASUS VG279Q is a perfect monitor for most uses. It has wide angles of vision, exceptional ergonomics and high maximum brightness. The movement looks great thanks to the high refresh rate, quick response time and flicker-free backlighting. This TV offers good picture quality, but it doesn’t look so good in a dark room. Unfortunately, 1080p resolution may disappoint some people, but the 27-inch screen offers a good amount of screen space.
ASUS VG279Q is a great gaming monitor. It has a superb, fast refresh rate, supports FreeSync and has a fantastic response time, so the movement looks great with very little blurring. It also has an excellent low entry delay in most modes, making it ideal for even the most competitive players. Unfortunately, 1080p resolution doesn’t offer an immersive gaming experience.
Good media monitor. ASUS VG279Q has excellent ergonomics and wide viewing angles, making it easy to share your work with a close colleague. ASUS VG279Q has an excellent 144 Hz upgrade rate. It supports FreeSync via HDMI and DisplayPort and works with NVIDIA Adaptive Sync controllers, but only via DisplayPort. We tested this with our NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB and had no problems.
