Review: 4K QLED TCL 85R745-AiPQ Engine, edge-to-edge glass design…

The TCL 85R745 is similar to the TCL 6 Series / R635 2020 QLED, but has a different stand. It is made mainly of plastic, but there is metal in the frame around the frames. It has a rather premium style, but the stand takes up a lot of space if you need to use a table. The stand is as wide as the TV itself, and the feet are also deep, so you will need a very large table to place it. The stand lifts the TV 3.9 inches off the table, and there is 4.8 inches at the bottom of the screen, so there is enough space to place a soundbar without blocking the view. You can not adjust the height of your feet. 85 inch TV footprint: 75.3″x 16.1″.
The TCL 85R745 has a decent build quality. The metal bracket holds the TV very well, and there is a minimum swing, which is great considering its size. The edges are metal, but the rest of the TV is plastic. There is minimal bending on the back, but the plastic on the bottom is inexpensive. The TCL R745 has a fantastic SDR peak brightness. It becomes bright enough to fight glare even in the brightest rooms. The brightness varies somewhat between scenes, and is particularly noticeable with larger areas of bright colors, as seen in the brightness drop with the 100% window.TCL R745 TVThe TCL R745 TV has incredible HDR brightness. The actual content is brighter than SDR, but the Test windows are just a little brighter. Although the small reflections are slightly darker than the rest due to local attenuation, it still makes the reflections really stand out. Unfortunately, large areas are once again darkened due to the aggressive automatic brightness limiter (ABL). The EOTF follows the target quite well, but the darker scenes are a bit too dark. The TCL R745 has fantastic accuracy after calibration. The White Balance has been greatly improved and the colors are also a little better. Both color temperature and gamma are up to date with our goals, which is great. The TCL 85R745 has good gradient management. It’s much better than the 2020 QLED TCL 6 Series / R635, but it’s even worse than many 4K TVs we tested. Bands are noted with most colors, especially gray and green.
TCL’s AiPQ Engine is driven by machine-learning algorithms to give you the best-possible viewing experience with vibrant color, sharp clarity, and dramatic depth.TCL R745 TVThe TCL 85R745 is good for watching sports in a well-lit environment. Visibility should not be a problem, as it becomes bright enough to combat glare, but becomes less bright with larger areas of uniform color, such as on a hockey rink. The movement looks good as it has an excellent response time, but you can notice black spots with darker objects. Unfortunately, it has narrow viewing angles, so the picture looks inaccurate from the sides. The TCL 85R745 TV is ideal for HDR gaming. It has excellent gaming features such as a 120 Hz panel and VRR support. It also has excellent response time and low input delay for a smooth and responsive gaming experience. HDR content looks great because it shows deep blacks, has a wide color gamut and gets very bright in HDR. Unfortunately, the local dimming function is mediocre and causes too much bloom around bright objects.
The TCL 85R745 is ideal for use as a PC monitor. It works well in bright spaces as it has good reflection management and fantastic maximum brightness, but large areas, like on a web page, are weaker. It shows the appropriate chroma 4: 4: 4, but due to its large size, the pixel density is low and you will have to increase the scaling. In addition, it has narrow viewing angles, so the edges of the screen will appear darker if you sit too close.  Photo:  TCLTCL 85R745 The TCL 85R745 is great for watching HDR movies. It has impressive performance in the dark room thanks to the high native contrast ratio and the local dimming function that enhances it. However, local dimming causes too much bloom around bright objects and can be a distraction. The TV displays a wide range of colors for HDR content, and becomes bright enough to highlight the lights. The TCL R745 QLED is a large and brilliant 4K TV that is only available in an 85-inch model. It is the mid-range model of the TCL XL line that they launched in 2021 and has only three TVs. The larger size offers a larger option than previous TCL models. It works well in dark environments because it has a VA panel with a high contrast ratio to show deep blacks, but even if it has a full-matrix local dimming function, it is mediocre and makes it bloom around bright objects. If you want to use it in a well-lit room, it becomes bright enough to combat glare, but its reflection management is simply decent. It has some additional gaming features like variable Refresh rate (VRR) support, fast response times, and relatively low input delay, but lacks HDMI 2.1 inputs, so it’s not future-proof for games with PS5 or Xbox Series X.
The interface of Roku TV is great in that it is easy to use, and the menu navigation feels very smooth. It automatically had an Olympic theme at the time of testing, so it is different from the TCL 6 / R635 ’20 QLED, but you can change the theme in the settings.
